Los Cabos has quickly become a de rigueur for gourmands across the globe, with award-winning restaurants and chefs placing Baja on the culinary map. In fact, this location is one of Mexico's most famous when it comes to top cuisine.
Pitahayas, at the Sheraton Hacienda del Mar, has once again received the prestigious Five-Star Diamond Award by the American Academy of Hospitality Sciences and the Wine Spectator Award, given only to those restaurants that offer a superior selection of quality wine producers and vintages, along with a thematic match to the menu in both price and style.
At the Marquis Los Cabos, the restaurant Canto del Mar has been awarded the Five-Star Diamond by the American Academy of Hospitality Sciences for several years, while its chef, Thierry Dufour, has been named Master Chef of France for his lifelong commitment to the promotion of French cuisine.
Honored with the 2009 AAA Four Diamond Restaurant Award, The Westin Resort & Spa, Los Cabos' Arrecifes offers patrons gorgeous panoramic views, as well as an eclectic menu prepared by Executive Chef Mirko Cappa. "Since arriving in Los Cabos, I have been inspired by the Sea of Cortés. It has been a pleasure to learn about all of the different species of life living there, as well as the specific culinary style of Baja California. I am proud to include a host of the new ingredients that I have discovered here in my new dishes." These include such options as a soya- and ginger-steamed yellowfin tuna on green asparagus, cremini mushrooms and cristal somen noodles. Chef Cappa's favorite? "The Seared Rock Sea Bass, cooked with sesame oil, grilled bok choy, black rice and spicy coconut sauce. It combines flavors from everywhere I have been, as well as where I am now."
Las Ventanas al Paraíso, whose many accolades includes some by Wine Spectator magazine and AAA, is also a local favorite. One of Las Ventanas' enticements is its Fire Cuisine menu, or "Cocina del Fuego," where everything is cooked on wood-burning grills or a brick-and-clay oven. Each piece of seafood or meat is branded with the resort's logo through special V-shaped grills designed by Executive Chef Fabrice Guisset. Among the offerings: roast free-range rock Cornish hen. Guests at Las Ventanas can also participate in cooking classes or tequila lessons.
A number of resorts in the area have received the "Distintivo H" award, bestowed by the Secretary of Tourism. This is the most important award given to restaurants in Mexico, presented to restaurants that have highly trained staff that pass international tests of quality and hygiene. The recognition means that the restaurant has passed more than 100 aspects of food preparation and handling, most of these taking place in the form of unannounced inspections. Among the hotels and resorts in Los Cabos that have garnered the Distintivo H award are the Hotel Finisterra, Hilton Los Cabos, Villa del Palmar and the Pueblo Bonito family.
